My favorite coffee place in Hermosa is Java Man, at the corner of Pier and Manhattan.  Here's a cool little review, from the Easy Reader, that is posted on their wall.  It's a hard to read, so I've transcribed the quote.  I ate a bagel from there today.

This would be a great college-town coffee house, except that due to an oversight nobody ever built an institution of higher learning in the vicinity. The staff at the Easy Reader learned everything we know from hanging out at the beach, but somebody told us that doesn't count. The staff knows and loves the stuff they are serving and doesn't charge an arm and a leg for it. The pastries served here are freshly baked at the Ocean Diner which is a plus - they're wholesome and rumor has it they're even good for you.
